about

Daniel Lea (CURA MACHINES, Heliochrysum and L A N D) and Guy Brewer (SHIFTED & Carrier) are NEW CORRODED on debut collaborative LP Pass Lightly.
Set for release via Lea’s Vast Habitat imprint, the record was composed remotely and documents an abstract, almost architectural process of sound collage that relies as much on system, balance and careful engineering as it does on chaos and chance. The result is a cohesive and detailed LP that delivers a modern take on the ideal of sound as a malleable force – of sonics as a vehicle for physicality, as much as aural pleasure.

Pass Lightly opens with Terminal, a dense, cinematic aria bound at its center by a single, gently modulated arp sequence. On the periphery, worn, percussive sound design motifs provide structure and rhythmic components, while dense waves of crushed ambience and sporadic, rising synths deliver narrative. Chromosphere takes the LP uptempo early on, but maintains the sonic intricacy that will come to define Pass Lightly as a body of work. Subtle feedback loops move in and amongst carefully articulated percussive elements, rolling bass components and clever mid-range sonics. A mix of field recordings and rich, melodic synth work builds out the piece – and as the track progresses, choral pads envelop the drum programming. Monolithic, Ambient cantata Carved Out follows, opening with immense proto-Gregorian pads that cut to a single, caustic drone before the work builds once more to a series of increasingly destructive crescendos, partitioned to great effect by hard-stops of silence.
Tap Out brings the LP down to eye-level and finds both artists moving at pace. Undulating, dynamic and powered by rolling drums, the recording draws key motifs out of crushed signals, with bursts of noise creating a caustic call and response. Meditative dirge Tears Like Water opens with emotive, wide-angle pads before half-time drum programming is introduced. Building slowly, with texture upon texture providing ample movement, the work shifts and teases with a writhing bassline warping in and out of the mix.
Gushing reintroduces that single modulating arp line, first heard on the LP’s opener. As the record progresses, there’s an undeniable sense of both artists pushing their respective compositional offerings, and the work here features some of the record’s most destructive sonics. It remains dynamic and not without introspective narrative, however. In and amongst the noise, delicate pads deliver soft harmonies that provide a pleasing contrast to the punishing moments of obliterated sound. Fathoms-deep roller No Ceremony follows, with organic drum programming and a series of powerful, glissando sonic motifs that create a veritable hysteria as the work progresses. The LP closes with Rusted Shore, perhaps the album’s most hopeful moment. Orchestral flourishes, bound by the same expertly executed distortion found all over the record, offer a sense of openness. Conversation is key to Pass Lightly – whether it be from a compositional standpoint, or in terms of the transatlantic process of execution. Rusted Shore makes for a rousing closing statement – communicating a palpable sense of rebirth after the intensity of what came before, writhing as though vegetation pushing up through cracks in the concrete.
